Large trucks are dangerous not only because of their size, but also because they often carry dangerous materials. While many trucks carry consumer goods, others carry chemicals, construction materials and other hazardous things that can compound the damage caused by a truck in an accident. With the presence of this dangerous load, a truck accident can easily turn deadly.
Recently Washington State Police responded to a fatal accident on I-5 which involved a Honda and a tanker truck. This truck had been carrying liquid nitrogen. According to reports, the driver of the Honda tried to pass the truck when the driver lost control. The driver apparently hit a center barrier before swerving and hitting the truck.
As a result of the impact, the large truck flipped over and landed on top of the car. However, workers had to unload the liquid nitrogen before the truck could be taken off of the car and the rescue efforts could continue. Unfortunately, the driver of the Honda was killed in the accident. Police continue to investigate why the accident occurred, but have said that the windy, rainy weather may have contributed to the accident.
Sadly, fatal trucking accidents are not uncommon in Washington. In many cases, truck driver and truck company negligence leads to the death of another motorist. It only takes one small mistake for a tragedy to occur when the vehicles are so large and carry dangerous materials.
In cases where someone is killed by a negligent truck driver, that person’s family should know that they have legal options. The family may be able to file a wrongful death suit to alleviate some of the financial strain created by the accident.
