We all know there is an increased risk in motorcycle riding because riders and passengers have less protection around them. Still, all motorists have a responsibility to remain alert and watch out for smaller vehicles. Despite efforts by private and public organizations to heighten awareness about the presence of motorcycles, accidents are a common occurrence. When negligence plays a role in the crash and someone is injured, then he or she may have grounds for a personal injury claim.
Unfortunately, these matters may be on the mind of the survivor of a recent motorcycle accident on Interstate 5 in Seattle. The crash happened on Labor Day, and the driver of the bike was pronounced dead at the scene. He and his passenger were ejected from the vehicle, and she was taken to Harborview Medical Center where she was listed in stable condition.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the driver, a 23-year-old Fife resident, was riding his 2005 Yamaha YZF-R1T at the time of the accident. Just after 11 p.m. on Labor Day, he was driving onto the on-ramp of I-5 near Mercer Street when he lost control of the bike.
Both riders were wearing helmets, and the driver had the proper motorcycle endorsement on his driver’s license. A local news report did not indicate the exact cause of the crash, but authorities are likely still investigating.
As is the case here, when a passenger is injured and a driver doesn’t survive, the passenger may seek compensation for medical bills and other expenses. That compensation could come from the deceased driver’s insurance company or estate. King County residents who are faced with this difficult situation should be aware of their options under our state’s personal injury laws.
