Last weekend I took my son Abraham for his first backcountry camping experience. We hiked just over 3-1/2 miles up to Annette Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area near Snoqualmie Pass. the hike in was a challenge, but we made it to the lake and the reward was well worth the effort.

The lake at 6am was beautiful with the fog rising. We waited until the sun rose over the ridge and had a 40 minute swim in our own private lake. The water was not exactly warm, but it was not nearly as cold as I thought it would be. We lingered at the lake for the next few hours, exploring and packing up our site before heading down around noon.

It was a great first camping experience for him, and a great bonding experience for both of us. I don’t think he’s ready for Melakwa Lake yet (one of my all-time favorites), but I plan to keep him engaged with hiking and camping as much as I can.

I find it important to spend quality time with my family outside the office, and this was one of my favorite ways to do it.

You can see my trip report on the Washington Trails Association website here.
