Seattle child hit by car while crossing street

As the weather gets nicer, people are out walking and enjoying the warmer temperatures. Many families are out walking as well. Drivers need to especially look out for children when driving near crosswalks. Drivers need to prepare for the unexpected whenever pedestrians may be near.

During a recent morning, a family was attempting to cross the street in North Seattle. While in the crosswalk between Greenwood Avenue North and North 130th Street, a seven-year-old girl was hit by an upcoming car. The collision threw her over 40 feet from the impact. The girl was responsive at the scene.

Following the accident, the car, which was driven by elderly man, kept going. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected as a reason for the crash.

Just under 80,000 pedestrians are injured each year in accidents involving motor vehicles according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. If a pedestrian accident is caused from the wrongdoing of another, damages may be available. When it comes to a pedestrian accident the court will look at such things as whether both the driver and the pedestrian were obeying traffic laws. A driver especially has a duty to be careful, including yielding at a marked crosswalk to pedestrians.

How terrifying for a parent to see their child injured. To see that child helplessly thrown from the impact of a car is a moment that will likely never leave the mind of the parent and sibling. The child will likely have pain and suffering as well as nightmares. A pedestrian accident involving a child is a life changing moment. Knowing your rights can help bring damages to bring relief from expensive hospital bills.
